Daily Skincare Routine: Normal Skin

Beauty

The routine below was developed for those with normal skin who are looking to get, or maintain, that ‘glow’. There are 6 evening steps and 7 morning steps to help keep skin hydrated and radiant.

Results

If you are new to caring for you skin in a disciplined way, you should start to notice results after day one! Your skin will look and feel softer and better hydrated with a nice all-day glow coming from consistent use and dedication. If you’ve been caring for your skin with fidelity for some time, results will take a bit longer to achieve and might be less noticeable. Stick with it – I promise you the payoff will be worth it!

Oh, and I always encourage people to take ‘before’ pictures so you can really see your progress.

    Exfoliate

  • TONE

  • NOURISH

    4 | Essence | I’ve included 2 options below…

    $ | The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

$$$ | Biologique Recherche Amniotique Serum | its hydro-fixing active ingredients help cells capture water and lock it into the outer epidermal layers, for long-lasting hydration. BR is super particular about their products so this serum can only be purchased from a licensed vendor. Reach out if you need one.

    5 | Eye Cream

$$| Platinum Skin Care Eye Duo Kit | targeted eye therapy to help w/ bags, circles, wrinkles and loose skin (eye lids)

  • PROTECT

    7 | Face Oil (PM ONLY) | I’ve included a few options below…

$ | Bio Oil | I’ve tried many face oils and recently purchased Bio Oil. It’s been around forever, is cheap, effective, and can be used all over the body. I love spreading it all over my chest and neck at night time, and because it’s affordable I don’t feel like I’m wasting it.

$$$ | Naked & Thriving Rejuvenate Restorative Facial Oil | he smell is nice and light and I love using it day and night since it absorbs nicely

$$$$ | Vintner’s Daughter | this is my absolute favorite face oil. While the price tag is shocking, know the ingredients are top-of-the-line. This oil has won countless beauty awards and is the holy grail of all face oils IMHO.

7 | Sun Protection (AM ONLY)

$$ | EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Face Sunscreen | I love this sunscreen and will probably use it for the rest of my life. It also comes in an untinted formula for darker skin tones or for those who prefer no tinting.

How to Conquer Winter Dry Skin

Beauty

Growing up in Arizona, I never fully appreciated the winter dry-skin phenomena. After living in the mid-west for the past 13 winters, I now totally get it. Layer on the brutal cold outside with the drying heat inside and your skin will be thirsting for moisture. As part of a strong daily skincare routine, I recommend these three things to keep your winter skin quenched…

1 | The Double-Cleanse

Yes, this means washing your face 2x. No, washing your face 2x won’t make you more dry IF you’re using the right products. By combining an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser the result will be supper soft, supple skin.

Products I recommend

Oil-based cleanser | Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil

Water-based cleanser | Plaine Products Face Wash

Process

  1. Rub oil cleanser all over face & neck in circular motions. Focus on areas with make-up.  Rinse completely with tepid water.  No need to dry.
  2. Add water and rub water-based cleanser all over face & neck in circular motions.  Rinse completely with tepid water.  Pat dry with clean washcloth.

2 | Hyaluronic Acid

This ingredient is a powerhouse when it comes to hydration. It is naturally produced by your body and the largest amounts of it are found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes. Adding this ingredient to your routine will help your skin retain moisture, leading to softer, more hydrated skin. The best way to add and use this ingredient is during the Essence step in a serum.

Products I recommend

$ The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

$$$ Biologique Recherche Amniotique Serum

Process

  1. After double-cleansing and toning, rub product all over face & neck – spread remaining on décolletage.

3 | Face Oil

Ahhh….my secret weapon against dry skin. Face oils are decadent, smooth, and leave your skin feeling like a baby’s bottom. They always go on last in the evening and before sunscreen in the morning.

Products I recommend

$ Bio Oil

$$ Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+

$$ Plaine Products Beauty Oil

$$$ Naked & Thriving Rejuvenate Restorative Facial Oil

$$$$ Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum (expensive, but soooo worth it!)

Process

  1. As the last step in the evening and before sunscreen in the morning, rub oil all over face & neck – spread remaining on décolletage.

Daily Skincare Routine for Minimalists

Beauty

A self-named skincare fanatic, I take my Daily Skincare Routine seriously. With 7-10 steps depending on the time of day and my current skin needs, I’m spending more time on my skin than most people can stomach doing for themselves. While I firmly believe in the Korean skincare routine I outline in Daily Skincare Routine Basics, I recognize most people don’t have the time or patience for it. This post aims to slim down the signature 10-step routine to something much more achievable for those minimalists out there.

With 5 morning steps and 4 evening steps, the routine below is focused on cleansing and hydrating to leave your skin glowing. You’ll notice I still recommend the double-cleanse. Yes, it seems silly to wash your face 2x when you’re trying to adopt a minimalist routine. However, these two steps are so essential there’s no way I would suggest skipping. Some friends credit the double-cleanse with the “clearest, smoothest” skin they have ever had. Trust me and invest the time in the double-cleanse. You won’t regret it!

  • CLEANSE

Step 1| Oil Cleanse | Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil | feels super smooth and like a mini facial massage

    Step 2| Water-Based Cleanse | Plaine Products Face Wash | eco-friendly, all natural, non-drying

Step 2| Exfoliate | use a small facial buff, like these from Amazon, for the water-based cleanse above. I also love the generic brand Target sells. Skip this step if you go with the p50 toner below.

  • TONE

Step 3 | Tone | I’ve included 3 options below, depending on your price point…

$$$ | Biologique Recherche P50 | this is considered a cult favorite and holy grail in the beauty world. It exfoliates and tones all in one, so if you use this daily then you can skip using a facial buff during the water-based cleanse. BR is super particular about their products so P50 can only be purchased from a licensed vendor. Reach out if you need one.

$$ | Son & Park Beauty Water | this is also considered a cult favorite and provides a nice, light refresh so you skin can better absorb what comes next.

$ | Thayer’s Witch Hazel | a classic, all-natural toner that can be found in any drug store

  • NOURISH

    Essence | skip

    Treatments | skip

Sheet Masks | complete 1x a week or whenever you feel like a special treat. There are thousands on the market and most drug stores sell a variety.

Eye Cream | spread your moisturizer up and around your eye area during full face application (below) – this will allow you to skip the use of a separate eye cream.

  • PROTECT

Step 4| Moisturize | I’ve included 3 options below, depending on your price point…

$$$$ | Vintner’s Daughter | is my all-time favorite skincare product, but I had to stop using this because $$$$. It’s the holy grail of all face oils and moisturizers, IMHO.

$$ | Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Anti-Aging Face and Neck Cream | this stuff is so amazing, I even convinced my partner to switch and now he’s in love with it too!

$ | Bio Oil | I’ve tried many face oils and recently purchased Bio Oil. It’s been around forever, is cheap, effective, and can be used all over the body. I love spreading it all over my chest and neck at night time, and because it’s affordable I don’t feel like I’m wasting it.

Step 5| AM only | Sun Protection | EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Face Sunscreen (AM only) | I love this sunscreen and will probably use it for the rest of my life. It comes in an un-tinted version, too.

Daily Skincare Routine: Acne

Beauty

Acne is a rough self-esteem buster that can plague anyone from tweens to adults. I’ve been an acne sufferer for the past 20 years and have tried just about everything to cure my skin. Below is an overview of the daily morning and evening routines I follow, the products I recommend using to tackle acne, and why I love them.

You’ll notice no harsh chemicals or typical acne fighters (like benzoly peroxide) in this routine. That’s because I believe firmly in nourishing the skin – not striping it of it’s natural balance. The more you strip away, the more sebum your skin needs to produce in order to find balance. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands. It coats, moisturizes, and protects your skin. It’s also the main ingredient in what you might think of as your body’s natural oils. When your skin starts producing extra sebum, you run into trouble with clogged pores and acne. Taking a more balanced and holistic approach helps your skin find the perfect sweet-spot of sebum production, and hopefully, leads to fewer breakouts.

  • CLEANSE

Oil Cleanse | Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil | actively fights blackheads and helps deep clean the skin

    Water-Based Cleanse | Plaine Products Face Wash | eco-friendly, all natural, non-drying

$$ | Some By Mi AHA PHA BHA 30days Miracle Toner | another cult favorite, this toner boosts cell turnover and contains tea tree oil to help combat breakouts

  • NOURISH

Essence | I’ve included 2 options below, depending on your price point…

$$ | Dewytree Ultra Vitalizing Snail Essence Water | nice and light, super hydrating, and works to target acne – win-win-win!

$$$ | Biologique Recherche Placenta Serum | this serum targets inflammation and scaring left behind from acne to help your skin bounce back. BR is super particular about their products so this serum can only be purchased from a licensed vendor. Reach out if you need one.

How to Layer Skincare Products

Beauty

If you’re like me and have a cabinet full of skincare products, it can be confusing to decipher which ones to apply when. Following the Korean skincare routine I’ve outlined in Daily Skincare Routine Basics can give you a head start in identifying product order.

Learning how to layer products can be tricky.  The general rule of thumb is to start with products that have smaller molecules, those that feel most like water, and build up to products that have larger molecules, those that are dense or oily.

Below is a basic cheat sheet I use to remind myself, because let’s face it, this is kind of confusing and we all want to get the most out of our products.

Click here to download and print a small guide that can be taped to your beauty cabinet for easy reference.

  • 1 | Oil-Based Cleanser

An cleanser that looks and feels like an oil. This step removes make-up and impurities.

  • 2 | Water-Based Cleanser

A cleanser that is slick and produces bubbles when mixed with water. This ensures no residue remains after the oil cleanse.

  • 3 | Toner

Water-like liquid that should be applied directly after cleansing. This preps the skin so all following products can penetrate better.

  • 4 | Serums

Liquid, runny, and can easily drip through your fingers.

  • 5 | Creams

Thick, smooth, and will not slide off your fingers.

  • 6 | Oils

Oily liquid, can easily run through your fingers, BUT have a heavier consistency than serums. These tend to have the largest molecules and, therefore, other products cannot penetrate them easily.

  • 7 | Sun Protection

Only needed in the morning and ALWAYS the last step. Always wear sunscreen!

Melasma Improvement

How I Improved My Melasma & Hyperpigmentation

Beauty

Whew…it’s a little tough to see these pictures of my face. And super scary to post them online. But, I’ve come a long way in my battle against melasma and if my routine can help just one more person, I’d feel pretty happy about that.

Melasma is a terrible beast that can crush self-esteem. Since it’s caused by a trifecta of hormones, sun exposure, and heat, it can be difficult to treat and it’s impossible to cure. As my dermatalogist told me, “this is part of you now, it will never go away.”

A self-named skincare fanatic, I take my daily skincare routine very seriously. My first pregnancy with my son resulted in melasma, which is technically incurable. My second pregnancy with my daughter brought on uncontrollable acne, which resulted in more hyperpigmentation from acne scars. Needless to say, an even skin tone was not something I had, and I badly wanted to bring it back.

Treating melasma and hyperpigmentation is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. Since melasma is technically incurable, the best anyone can hope for is to lighten it up and prevent it from coming back. Below is the routine I used to lighten my melasma. While I’m not yet at my goal of erasing all my acne scars, I’m much closer thanks to this routine. You can read how I maintain my skin during the winter months (aka melasma off-season) in Daily Skincare Routine for Acne & Wrinkles.

Preventing melasma from returning requires strict use of a high-quality sunscreen, physical protection like a hat, and general avoidance of the sun. For someone born and raised in Arizona, this was a hard reality for me to accept. I love the sun and spent many years trying my best to achieve that perfect glow. These days you will always spot me in a large-brimmed hat and sunglasses. I don’t care if it makes me look like an old lady; sun protection now reigns supreme in my household.

Routine

The routine below follows my Daily Skincare Routine Basics, which is why you’ll see it broken down into 4 parts. In addition to my daily routine, I began doing at-home chemical peels in mid-2020 and I believe these really helped take my battle against melasma to the next level. You can read more in my post on How to Master At-Home Chemical Peels.

  • CLEANSE

Oil Cleanse | Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil | feels super smooth and like a mini facial massage

    Water-Based Cleanse | Plaine Products Face Wash | eco-friendly, all natural, non-drying

Exfoliate | I skip this step because the toner I use has chemical exfoliants – two birds, one product:)

  • TONE

Five Skincare Tips to Live By

Beauty

Take care of your skin and it will take care of you.

I’m in my 30’s and have white European / Mediterranean skin, which means my face is in a race against time. I have always taken my skincare routine seriously and have spent loads of money on products over the years in search of my holy grails. However, the past few years my budding interest in skincare became a full fledged passion after pregnancy hormones completely upended my body’s balance. My first pregnancy with my son resulted in melasma, which is technically incurable. My second pregnancy with my daughter brought on uncontrollable acne. When my cousin, Priya, recommended I look into Korean skincare, I dove in head first searching for answers.

Korean skincare methods and products taught me a tremendous amount, and I was able to make some pretty drastic changes to my daily skincare routine with a more informed approach. Below are the five pillars of skincare I live by, in no particular order.

#1 | Mix & Match

It’s rare for one single company to produce all the best products for your skin. Mix and match between brands to find the best stuff for your skin. There are literally millions of products on the market, so finding the perfect ones for you can take some time and patience.

#2 | Change is Constant

Your skincare needs change…a lot. Weather, hormones, age, climate, and overall health are just a few of the things impacting our skin on the daily. A change in anything can prompt a new need for your skin. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new products when your skin seems a little off OR if you’ve been using the same thing for ages. It could be just what you need to bring that radiant glow.

#3 | Hydration is Key

I can’t say this enough! Drink lots of water and look for products that will support healthy hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a favorite ingredient of mine for boosting skin hydration.

#4 | Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must for EVERBODY no matter your age, gender, skin type, ethnicity, etc. No excuses.

#5 | Follow a Daily Routine

The 10-step Korean skincare routine, or what I call daily skincare routine basics, seems crazy intense, and it is, but it’s completely worth it. While 10 steps can seem intimidating, it breaks down into 4 simple parts: cleanse, tone, nourish, and protect. Read my daily skincare routine to see how I action these steps along with my current products.

My Journey Going Gray

Beauty

I started dying my hair around age 17 to cover gray, which means my first gray hair likely popped up around age 14, though I truly don’t remember it. I do remember sitting on my bathroom counter nightly plucking them out until I started noticing a slight thinning/bald spot. Yikes! Time to start coloring…

What started off as full color every 6-8 weeks slowly morphed into root touch-ups every 3 weeks. I’m not entirely sure how much I’ve spent on hair color over the past 18 years, but a back-of-the-envelope estimates puts it around $25,000. Holy shit. That’s a lot of money. That’s more than my college education and first car put together. For what? What was I paying for all those years? To look like an image I had of my self from my teens? Or to look like what I thought society viewed as beautiful? It certainly was not what Mother Nature intended me to look like.

This past January 2020 I decided I was done. Done with the 3-week root touch-ups. Done with scheduling my color appointments around important events or trips. Just done with hiding under fake hair. Another added slice of motivation for ditching the dye was my daughter. My gray hair is genetic and it’s pretty likely she will get the same awesome, silver gene. I didn’t want her wasting time and money trying to look like someone she wasn’t. So, January 23, 2020 was my last root touch up.

I was beyond excited to start this journey, and in true Ami-fashion, I dove head first into the world of silver hair (pun intended). My evenings were spent researching all I could about how to make the transition easier, learning about others who ditched the dye and what their experience was like, and plotting my own path forward. One of my favorite reads was “Silver Hair: Say Goodbye to the Dye and Let Your Natural Light Shine: A Handbook Handbook” by Lorraine Massey. The original curly-girl, I was familiar with Massey and trusted her sage advice. The book chronicled the unique journey of several “Silver Sisters”, as we call each other, and was helpful in outlining potential paths for me. I read it front to back at least three times.

Since I had been dying my hair dark brown for so many years, the transition was likely to be rough. The dreaded demarcation line was stark – dark brown against silver and gray was not a particularly attractive look. I had been spending so much time trying to boost my appearance, it felt ridiculous to intentionally go the other direction. What was I thinking!! Thankfully, I found a community of Silver Sisters on Facebook that really helped me stick to the path. It’s really phenomenal what a group of women from all over the world, with all different backgrounds, and of all ethnicities can do when they band together. The outpouring of love and support on that Facebook group daily is so inspiring and humbling.

I had been spending so much time trying to boost my appearance, it felt ridiculous to intentionally go the other direction.

Ok, so with the decision made to go all natural, what would my journey look like? Thankfully, the pandemic forced us all indoors and out of social gatherings, which meant my early months of grow-out were spent amongst my family and out of the public eye. With salons closed it wasn’t possible for me to dye my hair, even if I wanted to. This meant I had nothing to explain to anyone. And yes, I fully understand that I never have to explain any choice I make about my body to anyone. But let’s be real. This was a really really really scary thing I was doing AND it went against all social norms. Explaining it over and over to questioning people was not how I wanted to spend my time.

July 9th

After a few months of root growth I started getting a better idea of what my gray hair would look like, and I knew two things for sure: my silver hair was gorgeous and the demarcation line totally sucked. I knew I needed help to ease the tension between silver and dark brown so I reached out to my former stylist in Chicago who I trusted with my life for advice. Franky was a rockstar of support. When we first chatted via phone the excitement for my transformation was palpable. She was up to the task and eager to get me into her chair. My first appointment with Franky was in July, just a few days before my 35th birthday. She spent 14ish hours lifting old dye from my ends through clarifying washes and bleach. Afterwards, she applied a couple different toners to take my now yellow ends to silver. The outcome was pretty remarkable, but we both agreed it wasn’t what we had hoped.

August 30th

I went back 6 weeks later for a touch up that resulted in exactly what we were aiming for: a subtle gray-ombre or grombre. Thanks to a special care package sent by Franky, I’ve been able to touch up my ends with silver toner twice without the drive to Chicago. If you are close to Chicago and thinking about making a color transformation, gray or any color in the rainbow, please look up Franky, owner of I Fucking Love Your Hair. She’s an amazing human and supremely talented colorist. Seriously. Check out her stuff on Instagram @IFuckingLoveYourHair.

This past year has taught me a tremendous amount about self-love.

Today I am exactly at 11 months of root growth and I’m obsessed with my silver, most especially the stripes that frame my face. The past year has taught me a tremendous amount about self-love. No, I did not look beautiful the entire time and I still have plenty of bad hair days. Obviously the pics above are after a professional styled my hair. Below are some more real-life examples of what my process looked like over time.

If you’re considering going gray, I strongly recommend you do two things: 1) check out Lorriane Massey’s book, and 2) join our Facebook group for a community of silver sisters. It’s not an easy process, but one that will take you on an amazing journey of self discovery.

What scares you most about going gray? Are you worried it will make you look older? Are you afraid of the grow out process? Drop a comment below and let’s get a conversation going…

Daily Skincare Routine: Acne & Wrinkles

Beauty

A self-named skincare fanatic, I take my daily skincare routine very seriously. It’s special self-care that I get to do 2x a day – who wouldn’t love that!? Below is an overview of my daily morning and evening routines, the products I’m currently using, and why I love them. I like to switch up my products frequently, so this post may change over time.

No make-up & no filter skin using the routine below.

For context, I have combination skin: dry in some parts, oily in others. I struggle with acne and prefer to use products that are effective without being too harsh and drying. I’m also in my mid-thirties and would like to keep the march of time from creeping across my face so tackling fine lines and wrinkles is a must. Acne and wrinkles, yep, I’m one of the lucky ones!

  • TONE

Toner | Biologique Recherche P50 | this is considered a cult favorite and holy grail in the beauty world. It exfoliates and tones all in one, which is why I love it. BR is super particular about their products so P50 can only be purchased from a licensed vendor. Reach out if you need one.

  • NOURISH

Essence | Biologique Recherche Placenta Serum| nice, light and healing

Treatments (PM only) | Platinum Skin Care Fade Bright | works hard on my melasma without hydroquinone (potentially cancer causing skin care ingredient) and can be used morning and night.

Eye Cream | Platinum Skin Care Eye Duo Kit | targeted eye therapy to help w/ bags, circles, wrinkles and loose skin (eye lids)

  • PROTECT

Moisturizer | I layer moisturizes, starting with the cream and then topping with the oil

Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Anti-Aging Face and Neck Cream Kiehl’s also accepts any and all used beauty containers in store for a special recycling program:0

Bio Oil | I’ve tried many face oils and recently purchased Bio Oil. It’s been around forever, is cheap, effective, and can be used all over the body. I love spreading it all over my chest and neck at night time, and because it’s affordable I don’t feel like I’m wasting it.

Sun Protection | EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Face Sunscreen (AM only) | I love this sunscreen and will probably use it for the rest of my life.

  • Peels

I started using chemical peels in mid-2020 and they are a true game-changer! I complete a light mandelic peel weekly and a more intense TCA peel every 6 weeks. Read more in How to Master At-Home Chemical Peels.
